Faculty of Science and MIOC Collaboration
On March 14, 2025, four students from XV. Gymnasium (MIOC) in Zagreb presented research projects developed through our Bioinformatics groups at PMF, showcasing their work on cancer, microbiome, and COVID-19 under expert mentorship.
On March 14th, 2025, four students from XV. Gymnasium (MIOC) in Zagreb showcased the results of their four-month research projects developed through their participation in our Bioinformatics groups at the Faculty of Science (PMF). During this period, the students were introduced to the fundamentals of scientific research — from formulating research questions and hypotheses to analyzing their own data using the R programming language.
The projects were mentored by our members and demonstrate the impressive scientific curiosity and analytical skills of these young researchers:
Student | Project Title | PMF Mentor |
Dorian Likan Kelentrić | Prediction of the origin of colorectal cancer tumor cells based on gene mutation profiles | dr. sc. Paula Štancl |
Mia Krnić | Prediction of the origin of esophageal cancer tumor cells based on gene mutation profiles | dr. sc. Paula Štancl |
Kala Czigler | Changes in gut microbiome composition during aging across different animal species | dr. sc. Paula Štancl |
Anja Sprčić | Association of mitochondrial haplogroups with COVID-19 severity and outcomes | Doris Repušić, mag. biol. mol. |
We are proud of this collaboration, which continues to bridge high school education with real-world scientific research, inspiring the next generation of scientists.
